About Me
By the age of 6, I was playing teacher to cousins, friends and my stuffed animals. I had signed a contract to teach for Los Angeles Unified School District before I graduated college, and proceeded to teach in Watts for 7 years. It was there that I learned how disparate the educational experiences of students can be. As a result of discrimination my brothers faced in their early schooling, I attended private school from Kindergarten through grade 12. When I arrived at 109th Street Elementary as a first-year teacher, I realized how many opportunities I had been given in my own education. I became convinced that while I had been blessed to have the opportunity to go to private school to overcome the obstacles of discrimination my family faced, no family should have to do that in order to provide their children with a high quality education. And so my commitment to public education was born, and has continued for the past 25 years.
I have been a student, teacher, principal, district office administrator, and non-profit director of education. These roles have given me the opportunity to learn about our school system and the families we serve from a multitude of viewpoints, and it is this unique and expansive perspective I bring to the organizations I serve.
